Agriculture Plays A Key
Role In Bertie County

Bertie County was originally part of Albemarle County. In 1670, Chowan County, including Bertie Precinct, was cut from Albemarle County. Bertie Precinct was finally given the status of a county in 1722 when it separated from Chowan County. Initially, Bertie County was comprised of present Bertie County, Tyrrell County, Edgecombe County, Northampton County and Hertford County. By 1780, Bertie County had been divided to resemble its current shape.

Bertie County was named for James and Henry Bertie, who purchased land from its original lord proprietors. The county seat is Windsor, which was established in 1766 and made county seat in 1774.

Agriculture plays a key role in Bertie County. Its primary crops are cotton, tobacco, peanuts, corn and soybeans. Bertie County is comprised of fertile uplands and lowlands, with some large swamps called pocosins. The local timber industry is also a key to the area. Livestock and a growing poultry/broiler industry are major contributors to Bertie County’s agriculture base.

Bertie County has a relatively mild climate. The average temperature for January is 45 degrees, while the average temperature for July is 79 degrees.

Area schools include Aulander Elementary, Colerain Elementary, West Bertie Elementary, John P. Law Elementary School, Askewville Elementary and Windsor Elementary. Middle and high schools include C.G. White Middle School, Southwestern Middle School, Bertie High School and the Serendipity School. Higher educational needs are met by Chowan University, East Carolina University, Elizabeth City State University, Shaw University Cape Center, Martin Community College Bertie Campus, Martin Community College and Roanoke Chowan Community College.

Bertie County is served by Bertie Memorial Hospital, which provides outstanding services and quality care to patients with a wide range of health care needs. Other area facilities include Brody Pediatric Outpatient Clinic, Brody School of Medicine, Community Health Centers of North Carolina and others.

Among the state's most beautiful rivers, the Chowan River provides fishing, boating, sailing and water skiing, in addition to 20+ miles of shoreline. The river averages over 2 miles in width through the county. The Roanoke River is one of the state's most industry-compatible rivers. It borders the county for 50+ miles before emptying into the Albemarle Sound. The Cashie River winds through the county for some 20 miles and is home of the Sans Souci Ferry, one of the state's last operational 2-car ferries.

Cashie Wetlands Walk is a natural wetland environment with cypress trees and other swampland flora. The walk takes visitors to the edge of the Cashie River, which is 20 miles long, as deep as 80 feet in places, and begins and ends within the county of Bertie. An observation deck allows views of several different species of endangered waterfowl as well as other swampland animals in their natural habitats.

The Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1989, and is home to deer, otter, beaver, muskrat and black bear, as well as more than 190+ species of migrating birds. Informal trail systems are open to the public for hiking and birdwatching, including the Charles Kuralt Trail. Special fishing regulations apply in selected tributaries within the refuge boundaries, and fishing is permitted in the Roanoke River proper.
